Fir Meadow Ranch is producing Exquisite Quality Norwegian Fjord horses, is selling our high quality Alpacas (Suri & Huacaya), and has sold out  our show herd of  LaMancha Dairy Goats

NFHR & KFPS horses: We are producing NFHR foals to sell annually & sometimes sell mares.  We plan to produce KFPS foals, with plans on keeping our first filly, but selling colts and fillies after that.  We focus on movement, temperment, versatility, color genetics (NFHR, BLACK KFPS) when we can get it and staying close to European imports because of the rigorous testing and modern breeding programs they use to be approved translating into helping us meet our above goals to retain the traits that each breed  is esteemed for.

Alpacas- we are selling most of our alpaca herd to refocus on our horses.  Sires to many are National Champions in both Suri and Huacaya.  Some are bred for 2021.  Nice conformation and fancy fiber is what we are all about!

Fir Meadow LaManchas started in 1999 as a home dairy project. Barely had I acquired my first ladies when Don and Judi Hoy fed my goat habit by taking me to a show (thank-you Don and Judi  and John for everything you have done over the years to improve our herd!).  The rest is history as they say.

We have had goats more than two decades (still have some pets) and I've had horses since 1974 starting with a grade dun pony, then arabians, paints and since 2009 Fjords.   The alpacas also found us in 2010.

Our Majestic horses bask under the fresh air and beauty of the Olympic Mountains, Olympic National Park and enjoy their life in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley where we average only 17 inches of rain per year.   They have a nice barn, paddocks,  pastures, and even their own Fir Meadow naturally raised grass hay to enjoy  as well as herbs mixed into their daily mash.   We also have a full sized native dirt dressage arena and a round pen for their educational time.  We  live very close to a 200 acre county park that features equestrian trails and also 70  mile long Olympic Discovery Trail.   Just a  7 minute trail ride from us is Dungeness Recreation Area and Dungeness Spit.   We can get permit access for salt water beach riding during non bird nesting times of the year.

Our Main focus is now on our registered Fjord & Friesian breeding program on our beautiful 16 acre mountain view farm.   We work with exquisite lines, often imports or very close to them from Germany, Norway and Holland to produce versatile, high quality movement, excellent temperament fjords for  dressage, jumping, trail, driving and more.  We also have our eye on producing color and color recessives when we can but never forsaking conformation, versatility or temperament to do so.  Katherine is considered to have a 'natural' eye for high quality livestock for use and for breeding and always strives to produce a better animal for the breed.  Jerry is great at the daily ground handling, leading them by their manes, giving them hugs and scratches and seeing to it that they have what they need as well as husband proof training involving halter and lead rope  rides and trail riding.   Katherine does the more 'serious' riding/training work gently but firm if/as needed. We sell most foals (occasionally we'll keep a replacement filly) and sometimes mares.  We DO take deposits on foals in utero after mares are confirmed in foal.  Ask to see what we may have available.  We also PURCHASE  fillies and mares, especially mares confirmed in foal if they are the right horses at the right time for us.   Looking for that quality home for your beloved fjord?   Email us.  Being in NW Washington state makes us also one of the closest breeders to Alaska and British Columbia, Canada.

Katherine has had mares since 1974 and has bred several over the years (Arabians, Paint stock, Fjords, Friesian).   Jerry Married into the horses in 1988 and loves them.   Both of us have Norwegian heritage which eventually lead us to these wonderful, soulful, amazing small draft horses in 2009.

We also have experience breeding high quality alpacas including producing a homebred Double National and Futurity champion Fir Meadow Sniper's MacGyver and currently still breed (but are also selling out of) our Alpacas.

We bred LaMancha dairy goats for over 20 years and have produced countless top ten at National Show goats,  multitudes and multitudes of  Best In Show wins (over all of the breeds) in Milkers, Doelings and Bucks in two breeds (including Toggenburg) and many Top Ten in the United States milk/butterfat/protein milkers.     Our breeding experience in producing exceptional quality in dairy goats and alpacas is a very handy background to continue to parlay into our horse program.

We trust you will enjoy our horse 'family' as much as we do!

Linear Appraisal

Appraised since 1999 - 17 times as of 2019.  The bulk majority of our kids score V or Ec with no glaring faults or codes.   Nearly all of our goats mature into the LA 90 to LA 92 range with mostly E mammaries.

Our mares have either been evaluated or frequently come from stock that has been in Europe or the US.

Management

Our horses, goats and alpacas are raised by author and Master of Herbology Katherine Drovdahl on a completely alternative & sustainable wellness program to help them reach their genetic potential with lots of love & attention too!

Opal M.     dob 04/25/2004  KFPS / FHANA registered 840004200404482  Inbreeding Coefficient 4.3%
Sire  Anne 340 x dam Anika M.

Breeding plans in the research phase for a 2021 breeding to produce a 2022 foal.  Looking into AI possiblities with a KFPS approved stud.  Filly will be retained, colt will be for sale.     will plan to start saddle work with her this winter as she has not been ridden since about 2015.  Her Temperment is BEYOND AMAZING and I"ve bridled and saddled her without any issue or hint of issue at all.
Opal Is Registered KFPS/FHANA with full papers.  Opal has had 2 lovely foals, the latest turning 2 in June 2021, and a colt 'Opie' a few years ago (she was live covered), Pearl (filly) in June 2019 (A.I.). Had good pregnancies and birthed on her own. She is a wonderful Mom to her babies (had to take the last one off her at 10 months, or she'd probably still be nursing). Regular cycles. Opal is a pretty mover (smooth for purebred Friesian). Could make a darling dressage horse, driving horse, trail horse (or?) with someone that might be interested. She doesn't require medications, and has never had any founder or colic issues. She gets along well with other horses, and is also fine by herself. After Opal was started under saddle she had been ridden by confident intermediate teens, along with my advanced beginner Husband (with help, rode in the arena and on trails).
